While doing some research on another topic today, I think I figured out why that dangerous 400-metre-long bike-path gap continues to exist on de Maisonneuve Blvd., between N.D.G. and Westmount.
The city is expecting the new McGill super-hospital project to connect the two paths. The problem is a borough urban-planning committee doesn’t like the plan (page 4 of this PDF, and on page 7 of this PDF) because the proposed link is circuitous and includes a 20-metre-long tunnel considered unsafe.
And even if the super-hospital planners do go back to the drawing board it’ll be years before that hospital and bike path are ever built. Oh well.

I biked through that zone today, Andy. You’re right, it’s absurdly dangerous. You’ve proven that borough officials are aware of it, but chose to do nothing because of bureaucratic infighting. That’s wrong. Someone is going to end up badly injured or dead because Applebaum and company cannot get their act together.
