I’m taking the advice of a DMM,JTTM reader who told me to “smarten up!”

In this comment, Jodster took me to task for complaining about “Unaddressed Admail” (what Canada Post calls the junk mail that it delivers).

He makes some good points, though I’m not sure you can compare Bell Canada to Canada Post, the latter of which is a government-owned monopoly. Also, Canada Post is being disingenuous when it says that such mail “is received by consumers who want to receive it.” The truth is few Canadians realize they can stop the stuff by putting up a no-junk-mail sticker on their doors or mailboxes.

Also, I have nothing against Canada Post (and I’m not just saying that because one of this blog’s few readers is a former Winnipeg letter carrier…)

Anyway, yesterday we put up a scrawled no-junk-mail sign on our door (see picture, above) soon to be replaced by a more subtle sticker. We haven’t done it until now because we want to keep getting grocery-store circulars in Publisacs. Some investigating revealed that those flyers are all online now, so up goes the sign.

Of course, this doesn’t stop outfits like Business Week and Concordia University, which have my name and address on file, from sending me junk mail. They’ll continue to get stuffed envelopes from me. I’ve also signed up for the Canadian Marketing Association’s Do Not Contact service.

  • So, do the Publi Sac people respect your sign? In my neighborhood (Cartier sud-ouest) they do not. I fear (seriously) that it’s because the individuals who make the deliveries are illiterate (sadly).

The other lot who don’t respect my sign are the Realtor agents, who are more and more aggressive.

I’ve been phoning them up, telling them I give them 3 days to claim their junk mail, before I make a formal complaint to Canada Post. It has worked so far.

Sadly, there really isn’t a way to formally complain (that I know of). I think someone should start a blog page that has a list of “offenders”. That would at least expose the groups that do not respect the sign, and they will have some accountability.
